Mission: TU CASA's mission is to offer a fully inclusive university experience for students with intellectual disabilities by providing them with access and opportunity to the same services, programs, and courses as other Texas A&M University students. Each student’s university experience will be individually designed to reflect their interests, preferences, and future goals. This individualized approach will support inclusive academic, employment, and independent living experiences leading to meaningful, integrated employment and overall improved adulthood outcomes. Participation in TU CASA will lead to a 1.5 year-long University and Career Experience Certificate (UCEC) and a career pathway for integrated employment and the development of independent living skills through a person-centered approach.

TU CASA at Texas A&M San Antonio: Transition University for Career Advancement and Successful Adulthood. TU CASA model is designed to allow students with intellectual disabilities to receive a true university experience while gaining the skills and knowledge needed to transition to independent adult lives.

TU CASA addresses the critical needs in the community by establishing a sustainable program that:

(a) provides 18 months of fully inclusive PSE (post-secondary education) opportunities with access to typical and specialized A&M-SA services and supports.

(b) offers a meaningful credential upon completion that addresses academic, employment, and independent living domains.

(c) utilizes a person-centered approach to meet unique student needs and enhance their quality of life.

(d) employs comprehensive program evaluation

(e) applicants must be between 18-26 years old

(f) applicants must have a documented intellectual disability

Students who apply for the program must apply for FAFSA. If they qualify this helps with tuition and fees and can even pay for the entire program. There are also opportunities for students to apply for scholarships and we do accept foster care waivers. The 18-month program costs approximately $7000 unless they choose to live in campus dorms.

Veronica Kallead

Veronica Kallead is the Project Director with TU CASA tamusa @ Texas A&M University. In 2020, three of the professors from the university wrote a grant to serve the community for people with intellectual disabilities. The 1st cohort started in the Spring of 2021. TU CASA stands for Transition University for Career Advancement in Successful Adulthood.

Our main purpose for this program is to serve adults between the ages of 18-26 who have a diploma or GED and have a documented disability. The program is a 18-month certificate program where the student attends two classes for six credit hours. The main goal of the program is employment, second is independence.

We work on the students' strengths, so if they say we are interested in computers, drafting, office work, or medical field, we help them with their choice and assess whether they are capable to work in that field.

We connect with employers that are willing to allow students to intern and gain more of those skills. If you are interested in TU CASA, contact: www.tamusa.edu or (210) 784-2425
