Stonebridge Behavioral Health

McKenzie Sells Nancy Herrera
Founded in 2003, Stonebridge Behavioral Health serves as a stable foundation in the field of mental health, providing comprehensive psychological evaluations for individuals in San Antonio and across Texas.
The Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) refers children, adolescents, and adults to Stonebridge Behavioral Health, primarily those involved in the foster care system. These individuals undergo psychological evaluations to assist with treatment planning, adoption services, placement decisions, and determining the appropriate level of care.
A typical scenario begins when someone reports concerns to Child Protective Services (CPS), prompting an investigation. In many cases, removal is not necessary—parents may simply need resources, mental health services, or counseling. However, in situations immediate removal may be required. When a child is removed from their home, they are placed in foster care or kinship care, with some residing in emergency shelters. During this process, Stonebridge conducts psychological evaluations to assess cognitive functioning, emotions, behaviors, and overall mental well-being, ensuring appropriate placement and service planning.
DFPS caseworkers use the term "CWOP" (Child Without Placement) to indicate urgent cases where children are temporarily housed in CPS offices or hotels. In these situations, Stonebridge must act quickly, as DFPS cannot proceed with placement until the child has been evaluated. Stonebridge Behavioral Health receives over 450 DFPS referrals per month and provides evaluations both in person—at our offices in San Antonio, Houston, and Lubbock—or onsite at foster care agencies. Additionally, we offer virtual evaluations through telehealth services. Beyond serving the foster care community, we also support the general Medicaid population, ensuring accessible mental health care for all who need it.
