Veterans make up 8% of the homeless population in the U.S. Homelessness, PTSD, self-medication, and addiction have caused those who gave everything to lose everything. The Salvation Army Serves Hundreds of Thousands of Veterans Through:


Shelters

We give veterans a place to rest their head, a hot meal, help finding employment, and a fresh start.


Adult Rehabilitation Centers

We offer faith-based recovery & work programs to help our country's bravest overcome these struggles and return home to their families.


Community

We offer a variety of veteran services to meet their needs. Whether it's phone cards to call home, wheelchair assistance, large-print Bibles, or a friendly smile and companionship for the afternoon, we're always ready to come to their aid.


Senior Nutrition Program

Monday - Friday, adults aged 60+ in our Senior Centers share interests, develop new skills & enjoy the company of their peers. The center provide a balanced lunchtime meal in a congregate setting with supportive services consisting of:

  • Companionship
  • Nutrition Education
  • Basic Health Screenings
  • Social Services
  • Outreach activities
  • Recreation and Dance
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Exercise equipment
  • Age 60+ and spouse.

Rapid Re-housing programs

Provides Financial assistance to households who are homeless and require short assistance. Clients are referred by the Coordinated Entry system and thru the hotline from the City of San Antonio. Case Management is required to participate.


Food assistance:

Provides emergency food to families in the community. No appointment necessary. Must have a valid ID.


Homeless meal assistance:

Provides a sack lunch. Meals are available Monday - Friday from 11 am to 1 pm. No appointment necessary.


Financial Assistance for Utility & Water:

Provides assistance to households to prevent disconnection of services. Account must have an outstanding balance. (assistance for veterans only)


Financial Assistance Rent for Veterans:

Financial assistance to veterans who are struggling to pay their rent or mortgages (assistance for veterans only). Visit Veterans page for more details.


Dave Coy Men’s Shelter provides emergency shelter for men. Participants receive three meals daily and work with a case manager to identify & coordinate available educational & career opportunities and other resources to facilitate greater independence.


Types of stays:

Night by Night: Dorm style setting. Stay the 1st consecutive 3 nights free. Pay $12.50 per night after. Payable by money order only.

Work Program: If you are a full-time employee show proof of employment and pay stub for the past 30 days, Valid photo ID required. Fees apply.

SSI Program: To qualify, show proof of recent awards letter, meet Fee requirements, have a valid photo ID. Call for more information.


Eligibility:

  • Men 18 years and older
  • English, Spanish
  • Application Process: In person or by phone to receive services.
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Program Fees: Fees may apply; call for information
  • Documents Required: Valid photo identification, verification of employment (if employed), completed an intake application at the front registration desk, breathalyzer administered upon entry, and personal bags check. call for more information.
